Instagram’s Groundbreaking Video Editing Tool: A Sneak Peek into the Future of AI
Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, unveiled a revolutionary video editing tool yesterday, set to launch in 2025. This technology, based on Meta’s Movie Gen model, will enable users to transform their videos through simple text commands.
The Endless Possibilities of Instagram’s AI Video Editing
During his presentation, Mosseri highlighted the vast potential offered by Instagram’s AI video editing tool. Soon, users might be able to make minor tweaks, such as adding props (like a gold chain) or inserting elements into the background (such as a hippopotamus) in their videos.
Additionally, this new tool is expected to allow for more radical transformations, including complete outfit changes or applying special effects that give a plush-like appearance reminiscent of The Muppets.
Realistic Videos: A Challenge for Gen 3 Alpha and Sora AI
Two months ago, Meta introduced Movie Gen in October 2024. Today, this model already positions itself as a direct competitor to Runway’s Gen 3 Alpha and OpenAI’s Sora AI, which was recently launched.
For reference, Movie Gen is a generative video AI that Apple has developed to create customizable clips and sounds.
It also allows users to edit existing video content and transform a personal photo into a unique video creation.
However, Movie Gen builds upon Meta’s prior multimodal work, particularly Make-A-Scene and Llama, which already offered better user control over results.
Meta clarified in its release that these models are now capable of interpreting object movements, interactions between subjects and objects, as well as camera movements. They can also learn to replicate realistic movements for a wide range of concepts.
This, in my opinion, positions them as particularly advanced solutions in the field of AI-generated video.

Instagram’s CEO Shares a Demonstration of the New AI
To give us a glimpse of the performance of Instagram’s generative video AI, Mosseri himself posted a short demonstration video.
The video clearly shows how the model manages to minimize distortion in Mosseri’s clothing, even as he gestures while speaking.
At first glance, this Instagram AI promises similar prowess to Sora, which disappointed users after its recent deployment following its initial presentation months ago.
I wonder if Movie Gen, despite being integrated into Instagram, can maintain its performance once launched to the public.
The AI Race Intensifies: Movie Gen Stands Out with Unmatched Editing Tools
Major language models have witnessed a continuous evolution in their multimodal capabilities.
Today, this adaptability has led to a proliferation of AI tools capable of turning text into video over the past year.
In 2025, Movie Gen will face increased competition with the arrival of many similar tools.
However, its versatility is its key advantage. It produces videos and audio simultaneously from simple prompts.
Moreover, Movie Gen offers editing and customization features, which could serve as a decisive asset compared to its competitors.
