Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has announced an exciting new feature for users of the platform. Beginning next year, Instagram will incorporate video editing tools based on Meta’s AI Movie Gen model.

These tools will allow users to transform and personalize videos using simple text prompts. In other words, you’ll be able to edit any visual aspect of a video as if it were child’s play.

“We are working on some really interesting AI tools for video creators,” said Mosseri. Imagine being able to change your outfit, swap out the background, or add accessories in the blink of an eye. According to Mosseri, this technology will open a wealth of possibilities for content creators. For instance, you could transform an urban backdrop into a snowy landscape or create a cartoon version of yourself. While these demonstrations provide a glimpse of what this technology could offer, the actual implementation remains to be seen.

The Movie Gen model, unveiled by Meta last October, already allows for the creation and modification of videos and audio through text. Until now, it had been reserved for internal use; this will be the first time the video model is made available to the public via Instagram. This initiative positions Meta as a key player in the field of AI-powered video creation, putting it ahead of other giants like OpenAI and Adobe.

Meta’s announcement comes shortly after the launch of Sora, OpenAI’s video generation model, and recent advancements from Adobe with Firefly. This fierce competition to innovate in the generative AI space directly benefits content creators. Meta appears determined to make these tools widely accessible to enhance Instagram’s appeal against its competitors.

A Promising Future, but Questions Remain

While Mosseri’s demonstrations show impressive results, an essential question lingers. Will accessibility and ease of use be available for everyone? Modifying a video smoothly and realistically presents a colossal technical challenge. Furthermore, the widespread use of these features raises ethical and regulatory concerns, especially regarding the authenticity of the created content.
