Amazon and Google are venturing into nuclear energy. If you’re seeking energy independence, I believe this announcement will certainly pique your interest!
The race for energy innovation is underway, and this is undoubtedly why tech giants are getting involved as well! Among these giants are Google and Amazon. While they are already known for their contributions to technological innovation and artificial intelligence, today they are adding another string to their bow: nuclear energy. Google and Amazon aim to invest in small modular nuclear reactors. Although this technology is still in development, it is already making waves. Here’s an explanation!
Why do Amazon and Google want to invest in nuclear energy?
Last Tuesday, we learned about the nuclear agreement between Google and Oklo, a startup specializing in the production of small modular nuclear reactors. The Silicon Valley giant is waiting for these reactors to come online to start powering its data centers with nuclear energy.
On its part, Amazon is going to invest in a nuclear startup. The global e-commerce leader is taking the initiative by committing funds to create its own startup focused on the production of small modular nuclear reactors!
But why has Amazon made such a bold decision while Google remains cautious? Simply put, it’s to swiftly address the energy needs of its data centers. Andy Jassy’s company seems keen on making a significant contribution to the fight against climate change and much more. In my opinion, it aims to democratize the use of nuclear energy, not just for its own needs!
Will this energy innovation meet the needs of other companies?

Google and Amazon are pursuing small modular nuclear reactors primarily to create an alternative to traditional nuclear power plants. The concept they wish to implement is quite straightforward, especially in Amazon’s case. The company plans to produce smaller nuclear reactors, then transport and install them on-site.
In contrast to large nuclear power plants, the manufacturing and installation costs will be significantly lower. Moreover, these reactors can easily adapt to demand. If needs change, adding new reactors can be done with minimal hassle.
So, if you ask me whether the modular nuclear reactors that Amazon intends to launch could be used by other companies seeking energy independence, the answer is yes.
Indeed, these two tech giants are heavily investing in adopting nuclear energy for their own needs. However, over time, I believe they will start to market these reactors. As technology companies grow alongside their electricity demands, the democratization of nuclear energy seems imperative.
While nuclear energy sparks both fascination and fear, do you think it will be an alternative to climate change? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
